WordPress for iPhone 2 submitted for review

Posted on 13 Oct 09 by Matt Thomas

This week I’m in beautiful Quebec with the staff of Automattic for our yearly company meeting. While my coworkers are celebrating fall birthdays, I’ve been working on uploading the final build of WordPress for iPhone 2.0. I can’t say for certain that ours is the first iPhone app submitted to Apple while drinking champagne in a former rectory, but I’m definitely not complaining.

The result of months of effort by a team of designers, developers, and everyday WordPress users serving as testers, WordPress 2 is a remarkable leap for those who blog with their mobile device. Sure, we’ve got a great new UI and some handy new features. But we’ve also made the app work with more setups than ever before, eliminating dreaded errors for many of you who might have had trouble before.

Our many thanks go out to the nearly 100 people who helped create version 2.0 by testing and reviewing the app. Your feedback and bug reports were invaluable — several of the most important things that we’ve done in version 2.0 are the direct result of tester feedback.

We’ll be waiting for the official word from Apple on availability, but we’re also happy to announce that we’ve set up a public P2 development blog to document the progress of the app. Making WordPress for iPhone will be the official source for the very latest news on the design, development, and future direction of our app — and you’re invited to join the discussion there. We’ll continue to post the most important announcements here — but the development blog will be the source for not only the future of the project, but the place where you can help guide it.

Thanks again for all the help and guidance you’ve given us during this process. We can’t wait to let you know just as soon as WordPress 2 is available in the App Store.

Great news. Given the 2ish week wait period for app approval, when can we expect some documentation on new features?

    1. Matt Thomas

That’s our next task. :) I’ll work on compiling a full list of what’s new in 2.0 over the next few days. If you’re into information overload, you can take a look at every ticket addressed in version 2.0.

What is the difference between the P2 dev blog for the app and the WordPress for iPhone forum? Is one supposed to be used over the other or will they be used interchangeably?

    1. Matt Thomas

The Requests & Feedback forum will stay put as an unfiltered (or barely-filtered, anyway) forum for ideas from users. Everyone’s also welcome to comment on the new dev blog, but we’ll keep the discussion focused on the work we’re actively doing.

@jeffro my understanding is that the P2 dev blog will be a place where developers can discuss solutions to bugs/problems at a code level, along with figuring out which features are to be prioritised etc.

Basically what we have been doing in private, but it will now be open to the public.

Can you finally use the app to add replies?

    1. Gareth Townsend

Not yet Chris, but it’s on the short list for the next release.

Not sure if this bug is covered in the trac. When i am reviewing a post pending from one of my writers and there is a tag in it, after i publish it, everything below the tag is lost. Currently i have to copy all text, publish, then go back and paste in the whole post again and update post.

  11. Nazaroth

That was meant to say “more” tag

    1. Matt Thomas

That has indeed been fixed in version 2.0. :)

Any plans for showing stats in the app?

    1. Matt Thomas

Yep — we’ve discussed it in ticket #66 in Trac. I don’t yet know whether it will be in the next version of the app, but you can subscribe to that ticket and keep up with our progress on the development blog to find out.

Are you guys planning to port this to android as well?

    1. Matt Thomas

We’re just beginning work on WordPress for Android. We’re still in the very early stages, but more news should be forthcoming in the near future.

I assume this has the XML-RPC fix in place for it. That was the one major bug that prevented me from using this app on most my wordpress blogs for some reason it’d work on some but not others.

Can’t wait for this to get pushed to the App Store so I can grab and test it.

    1. Gareth Townsend

XML-RPC fix is in place. So it should be clear sailing for all but the most strange of blog setups.

  18. Michael

Really looking forward to this release. Hope it doesn’t stay in App Store limbo for too long.

Does anybody have an idea, for how much longer this will be “pending” whith Apple ?.
