Defiantly feels like an early version though, found a few rough bits, and think the interface could do with a rethink. Too many taps to get to post, especially if I want that post to be a picture with a comment.
Oh and before I forget to write this, for some reason, the “posts” button in the top left didnt show when viewing Local Drafts on my iPhone. The button was there as I was able to go back, but it didnt have any graphic so for a few seconds i was unsure if i could go back!
As for the interface, I wish there was a starting screen a bit like the typepad app like this: http://tinyurl.com/5zrubf
I like the heavy visual look, I think that a lot of people dont need to see a list of blogs on the first screen as many only have 1. This should be in settings perhaps with a slider. If the user has more than 1 blog ticked, perhaps the list of blogs is shown, if only 1, then there is no need to show a list.
Also, I think the UI should be geared around making a new post, rather than the current look that seems geared around editing old posts with posting a new post seemingly less important. Perhaps the graphical start page could have a button at the bottom called “previous entries”?
I think the home screen should have big buttons like typepad with a menu at the bottom (>) and big buttons (-):
- Create a Post
- Create a Photo Post
Also, 1 really cool feature would be able to bog about web pages i vistit on the iPhone. One way to do this is to have a webkit browser within the wordpress app, hopefully that can see the mobile safari bookmarks. then when viewing a page a want to blog, click on the bookmark plus symbol and a button to “blog this” is shown. Press this an a new post is created with a link to this web page but we still have the option to change the post title, category and add a note. I know we could kind of do this now using post by email, but thats not the point, it would be better within 1 app.
Sorry about the long post, but im very excited by this app, and i cant wait to see what the future holds.
If you guys want any help on UI, then Im more than willing to help out, Ive got many years experience on this sort of thing.

It’s still very rough around the edges. The posting time function was all screwed up for me. It had me posting 5 hours after I posted. The post I posted with the iPhone didn’t turn up on my main page, though when I logged into the admin page, it shows as posted.
Also, I was thinking of this being an awesome photoblog app, but the posting of pictures is limited. There is not much in the way of choosing how it will look on the site.
I am happy that it’s now available and will put it to use, it needs more work.
Very cool application, though I was a little surprised to see no support for comments at all. The lack of landscape keyboard in editing was also mildly disappointing.
Overall it’s great and I’m really excited for the ability to do offline post creation now, but I think taking a page from some of the existing iPhone WordPress web plugins and their interfaces is a great start.
[...] WordPress have released their native iPhone application, and it is now available in Apple’s App Store. It’s fairly basic right now, and it crashed on me whilst writing this post, but at least it saves a local copy and recovers it. It allows photo uploads from your library, or will take a photo using the built-in camera, and will also show you a themed preview of your post. [...]

Is this available in all the App Stores or only in the US? App Store on my UK iPhone is not listing the app.
It should be available in every country’s App Store. We’ve heard from UK users who’ve been able to download it, and a quick check of several countries seems to indicate it’s available now worldwide. It may have just taken a while for all the countries to sync up.

ok. i think the error due a: it was that first post that was triggered by the wordpress app installation, and it could have had some corrupt date somehow. or b: i had added a special character through the web admin, perhaps the phone app does not handle special characters yet. i lean towards a, a corrupt post to begin with. anyway, i deleted, started the whole thing from scratch and had no problems. now that my issue is resolved, i can honeslt say, good job guys. it’s a sweet little app. now can we edit static pages on version 2?
Fantastic right out of the box guys. great job! after all this time of using the oddest workarounds to post a photo from my phone to my blog, that one feature alone I would gladly have paid for. I know there will be wants and wishes for future updates, but as long as i have this wonderful app just like it is I am happy. Thanks so much!

I don’t know if it’s just me and my acquaintance, but both of us have experienced the same thing: the application crashes as soon as we use characters like ÅÄÖ.
In my case the app does seem to post an empty post into the feed, since my Google Reader feed picked up an empty post ($title$ and $post$ or something similar) – but nothing showed up in my posted items, my drafts or on my website. This is also slightly disturbing, since the status for this post should’ve been “draft” and therefore shouldn’t have shown up in the feed.
I’m using an old gen iPhone with 2.0, and my blog is in UTF-8.

Great app so far for a 1.0. I have a few suggestions:
Allow the photos that are uploaded and posted to be part of a wordpress gallery using its shortcode. I think this would allow people to use things like lightbox to flip between photos easier. Since these photos are uploaded and referenced to the current post I cant see this being to hard to setup. Also by doing the shortcode we can select where the photos would be located in the post. If you forget to use the shortcode it would default to the bottom like its currently doing.
I think working the admin interface into the application would be a good idea as long as you can make things fit. I like the ideas that @Tim de Ville brought up. Solid UI (such as twitterrific on the iphone) makes for a good experience.
@Tim de Ville also spoke about having the default landing area of the app be geared more towards writing a blog post vs editing an old one. I think this is the right way to go about this. Maybe have the new post screen show up with a drop down at the top to select which blog I’d be posting to.
Great app and I’m looking forward to this thing evolving into something I’ll be using more and more.
Yesterday I left a comment about not being able to add a blog. I figured it out and figured you should post this somewhere becasue a lot of people are having issues with this. It is of course user error as your program works flawlessly. I realized that my WordPress address in my WordPress general settings was set to just “/blog” instead of “http://mydomain.com/blog” once I changed that, bingo. I think by default it is just set to /blog, at least with my Netfirms account it set it up that way. THANKS YOU FOR THE AWESOME APP!!
Ok .. now if we can get something for the rest of us, that would be great. I use Windows Mobile on a PDA .. would love to have an app like this for my PDA .. or anything that’s not running Apple’s stuff.
Thanks for the great, free app. I think it will be perfect if you’ll add landscape mode so that the landscape keyboard can be used. There currently are no apps that use the landscape keyboard effectively for offline writing. The landscape keyboard is so much faster. Please make this possible.
